The first song of Makkun's that I ever heard (and didn't know at the
time) was "Get Along", the Slayers first season opening theme. This
happened to be a Duet between Masami and Megumi, as well as the ending
theme, "Kujikenai kara My Heart", but I didn't know it at the
time.
After that came "Risky Gamble", also from Slayers, then "Rinbu
Revolution", the Utena opening theme. During this time, I had no idea
who sang these songs, or I mistook them for being Megumi [only]. Little
did I know, Makkun was the one behind these great songs.
Finally, when I got into Cyber Team in Akihabara, I saw the light.
amerikajinv("OH MY GOD");. "Taiyou no Hana" was instantly my favorite
song, and remained so for a long, long time (the position eventually
transferred to "Spirit of the Globe", also by Makkun). It only took one
listen to the first 30 seconds of that song to capture me. "Birth" was
very good in its own right, and in my top 20 favorites, at
least.
The person singing these awesome songs was nameless to me, but I HAD to
find out. While digging around on IRC looking for an mp3 of "Taiyou no
Hana", I discovered the answer to the Mystery. The name of the person
singing these songs was "Okui Masami". I had to learn more. I loved her
voice, the style of her songs; there was nothing about her that I didn't
like as of yet.
So I went poking about for information. Generally, when one does this,
one finds a little more than they bargained for. I ended up discovering
many many more songs that I liked that she sang; in fact, there was not
a song she sang that I didn't like of all the stuff I found. All of this
took place around 1999.
I eventually picked up several of her CDs, and wow, I now had much
Makkun goodness, I just didn't know what to do with myself. I discovered
so many more of her wonderful songs, including (but not limited too ^_^)
"Mask", the ending theme Bakuretsu Hunters, "Spirit of the Globe", the
ending theme from Jungle de Ikou, "Only one No. 1", the opening theme
for Di Gi Charat, "Lonely Soul", "Never Die", "Shake It",....should I go
on? Do I really need to? They are all wonderful.
Another thing that had me "wow"-ed about Makkun was the fact that she
was in her 30s. Wow, a pop idol that is older than 18! Does that happen
these days? *grin*
And then I saw one of her concert videos. HOLY CRAP! This chick is in
her 30s?! You have GOT to be kidding me!?! Her voice radiated out,
boundless. She ran all over that stage, dancing, jumping, singing,
grining like she really, truly loved what she did. The audience roared
as they sang along. You can tell she loves what she does by that "glow"
she radiates when she is on stage.
So. She has the attitude. She has the spunk. She has the voice. She has
the songs. She is absolutely spectacular. She is the best. But don't
take my word for it. Buy her CDs, her DVDs. Listen to her songs, watch
her concerts. Know the greatness that is Makkun.
